 General October Garden Chores

  • Get your soil tested and add amendments as needed

  • Plant trees and shrubs –be sure to keep them well-watered

  • Bring all houseplants inside – check for insects, bugs and other opportunistic travelers

  • Dry and save seed

  • Take cuttings of tender perennials

  • Harvest herbs – freeze or dry to enjoy over the winter

  • Remove debris from beds and add layer of protective mulch

  • Clean and store gardening tools

  • Clean bird feeders

  • Harvest remaining vegetables – sweet potatoes, tomatoes, etc

  • Keep mowing as long as your grass is growing

  • Clean your gutters and downspouts to remove fallen leaves and other debris

  • Mark your perennials with permanent tags, or create a map showing their locations so you'll know where and what they are in the spring
